It doesn’t matter where you’re from, it doesn’t matter what you look like, or what you’ve been through, I believe you’re capable of achieving anything you put your mind to. I came from Jamaica and joined my family in Canada in 2010 in search of better opportunities, to create a better life. That’s why I’ve worked so hard to achieve everything that I have. I want to show others who come from a similar situation, that if you put your best foot forward, you can reach your goals.
"What drives me is the dedication to be a better person. To make a difference, not only for myself, but for my family."
When I arrived in Toronto, I enrolled in Seneca’s Accounting diploma program, having already completed a degree in Business Administration back in Jamaica. I was drawn to Seneca because of the hands-on learning, and the co-op placement opportunities that would give me a chance to gain work experience in the real world. At first, my educational experience in Canada was a bit of a culture shock. The school system is different than it was back home, and it took me some time to get used to a new learning environment. But I knew I had to work hard to keep pace, and there were definitely many nights spent studying in the library. All the work was worth it though. Seneca not only taught me the necessary skills I needed, but it gave me the opportunity to make inroads into the industry.
After completing my diploma, I transitioned into Seneca’s Bachelor of Commerce degree program in International Accounting and Finance. As part of the program, I did a co-op placement at an international accounting firm. That same firm offered me a full-time position once I graduated. I completed my degree this past April, and a month later, I started my new job as an accountant at the firm. It’s been a tremendous opportunity. I’m learning so much. And all the skills I acquired at Seneca I’ve been able to apply to my current role. While I have just begun the next phase of my life, my goal is to one day open my own accounting firm. I believe that if you’re persistent and dedicated, you can achieve your goals. I am proof of that.
"Many people don’t get the experience to become a citizen of another country. To have that experience, I knew I wanted to make the best use of it. And thanks to Seneca, I’ve been able to succeed."
